A gazebo has taken pride of place in a new £36,000 sensory garden at a Staffordshire school.

Belgrave Primary School pupils helped change the wasted ground into a learning and development space, the Sentinel reported.

It features not only a wooden gazebo, but also a plant-themed sitting area, musical instruments and a number of shrubs.

Of the institution's 470 pupils, 120 have special educational needs, with the garden aimed at helping them develop skills during their school career.

"We had to come up with an action plan and the more we discussed it, the more the idea of a sensory garden seemed the best thing," assistant head teacher Kathryn Crawley told the newspaper.

She added that it is a place which each member of the school community can enjoy and revealed that there are plans to invite other sections of the local congregation to the garden.

Meanwhile, a West Sussex school has been given an award after it provided pupils with a gazebo and hooded all-weather suits to enable them to work outdoors.
