A man has turned the railway signal box that once stood next to his childhood home into a unique garden shed.

Stephen Randolph, 60, who was brought up next to the railway station in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, said that once he learned the signal box was due to be demolished he decided to save it by putting it to good use at his current home in Barlow, near Sheffield.

This involved dismantling the 121-year-old structure before hiring a van to transport it 120 miles to his garden.

Mr Randolph then spent a year restoring the signal box and adding memorabilia to give it back its authentic, former character.

"When I discovered new owners wanted to get rid of the signal box I offered to take it off their hands and they jumped at the chance," he explained.

"Some of the bits had to be replaced but about 80 per cent is original. It's only about 9ft by 8ft so it doesn't take up too much room and it blends in well with the surroundings."
