Garden centre staff in Wokingham have been honoured with a national award after launching a "grow-your-own" initiative aimed at the local community.

Heathlands Garden Centre was presented with the community involvement award at the recent 2010 Garden Retail Awards in recognition of the scheme, reported.

The initiative saw the garden centre launch 110 allotments for keen gardeners looking to plant their own fruit and vegetables.

According to the news website, the plots are located on a rabbit-proofed site and all plot holders received a starter kit complete with gardening tools.

Gardeners had the option of a basic plot at £5 per week which includes a composter and access to a water trough, or an enhanced plot for £10 with a greenhouse, shed and water butt.

Tracey Fisher, centre manager, said: "The plots are designed to contribute to the local community and build community spirit as well as to encourage people to learn about and enjoy the benefits of grow your own."
